Project burnup

You can access new agile reports via Jira's main menu "Boards" → "Agile Reports":

Project burnup chart shows the burnup of completed sprints and automatically calculates a completion forecast for remaining incomplete work.

You can generate the burnup for any scrum board which you have access to in Jira by selecting it in the ''Agile board" dropdown:

Configuration options

The automatically generated burnup consists of two major parts: burnup history and completion forecast.

Sprint count

By default burnup history is shown for last 3 completed sprints which you can change using "Sprint count" option in the "Past sprints" section.

Sprint filter

"Sprint filter" is another useful configuration option which helps to filter completed sprints by name with regular expression value. When there are two teams which have sprints on the same board "Sprint filter" helps to get the burnup and forecast for a particular team. Typically teams use unique prefixes for their sprint names. It would be enough just to specify team name in the "Sprint filter" option.

Sprint length

Sprint length in days is automatically calculated based on historical information and is used in forecast completion dates calculation. You can adjust sprint length to check how that affects the completion dates.

Remaining work

Remaining work is calculated as the total estimation of the backlog plus incomplete work in currently active sprints. Changing the remaining work value you can play different what-if scenarios and find out how completion forecast changes in each situation.

Remaining work growth

With this option you can simulate the dynamic future work growth. The value in this field means how many 'Points' or 'Hours' of work will be added to the backlog in every future sprint. When remaining work growth has non zero value the "Scope" line on the chart will be drawn with some angle which reflects the scope growth.

Forecast summary

The default forecast includes the completion dates for min, average and max velocity over last 3 completed sprints.

It is also easy to find an answer for question "What if my team's velocity would be..." by adding a custom velocity value in the forecast table:

Dashboard gadget

Project burnup chart is also available as a dashboard gadget which works similarly to the report described above, but this fewer configuration options available.

Epic burnup

The Epic burnup report and gadget functionality is 100% the same as Project burnup except that you need to select an epic in addition to agile board. Please refer to the detailed overview of the Project burnup report and gadget above.

Release burndown gadget

Release burndown gadget is the implementation of Release burndown report available in Jira Software, but not available as a gadget.

The gadget configuration is simple and includes two parameters:

  • Agile board
  • Version (release)

The resulting burndown chart is calculated and looks similar to a built-in Release burndown.
