How to manually update the app in Jira Cloud

In most cases, Atlassian automatically updates Cloud apps to the latest version. However, some updates - such as major releases that require new permissions or scopes - need to be applied manually by a Jira administrator.

The app never creates, edits, or deletes anything in your Jira instance. The only exception is the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA) feature, where the app recreates your chart configurations in your new Cloud instance as part of a Data Center to Cloud migration.

Why does the update ask for new permissions?

Most app updates happen automatically in the background - no permissions, action, or downtime required from you. A manual update with a permission prompt is only needed for rare, specific releases that add a capability requiring a broader Jira scope.

When this happens, you'll see a screen similar to the one below, listing exactly what the app is requesting:

For example, our 8.6 release added a new "Actions in Jira" permission to support the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA) feature (Data Center to Cloud). This permission looks broad - it lists issue creation, edits, worklogs, and project settings - because Jira's Forge platform doesn't let apps request a narrower, more granular set of permissions for a single feature. It displays the full permission bundle even though, as noted above, the app only uses it for that specific migration flow.

Why we recommend always updating to the latest version

We strongly recommend keeping the app up to date, even when an update requires manual action:

  • New features - each release may add functionality you don't have on an older version.

  • Security updates - only the latest version continues to receive security fixes; older versions eventually stop receiving updates entirely.

  • Support - our team can only fully assist with issues on the latest supported version.

If you don't have Jira admin permissions

Contact your Jira site administrator and ask them to update the app. Only users with admin access to the Atlassian administration console can perform manual app updates.

If you have Jira admin permissions

Follow these steps to manually update the app:

  1. Go to admin.atlassian.com and log in with your admin account. Select your organization, then select the Jira site where the app is installed.

  2. In the left sidebar, click Connected apps (under Settings).

  1. You will see a screen suggesting that app management has moved to Administration. Click the Take me there button to go to the Connected Apps page.

  1. Find the app in the list and click View app details. The app name depends on which product you installed - for example, Agile velocity charts: gadget reports on Jira Dashboard or Agile charts: gadgets, reports, graphs, KPIs on Dashboard.

  1. If an update is available, you will see an option to update. Click Update and wait for the process to complete.

After the update is finished, the latest version of the app is ready to use. You may need to refresh your Jira pages to see the changes.
