Calculation > Start timer on / Pause timer on
For Cycle and Lead time, you can configure which statuses count as In Progress and Done using the Start timer on and Pause timer on settings, and define which transitions trigger the timer to start or stop:
Start timer on: custom In Progress statuses
For Cycle time, the timer starts by default when a work item first moves to any status in the In Progress category. You can configure one or multiple custom statuses to match your workflow.
For Lead time, the timer always starts when the issue is created.
The custom In Progress statuses you configure will also affect the In Progress group in the Time in status chart settings.
Pause timer on: custom Done statuses
For both Cycle time and Lead time, by default, the timer stops when a work item moves to any status in the Done category for the last time. You can configure one or multiple custom statuses to match your workflow.
Transitions
For both the start and end timers, you can choose which transitions should count.
Custom transition configuration is available only if the selected category includes a single status or only one status is selected.
Available options:
First transition to status
Last transition to status
First transition from status
Last transition from status
Use case: measure the total time to complete an issue
Workflow example:
(0️⃣) Issue created → (1️⃣) In Progress → (2️⃣) In code review → (3️⃣) ready for testing → (4️⃣) in testing → (5️⃣) in progress → (6️⃣) In code review → (7️⃣) ready for testing → (8️⃣) in testing → (9️⃣) published to prod → (🔟) done
For this use case, select Cycle time and leave the default settings:
The chart will calculate the total time that elapsed between two moments:
Start timer on: the first transition to an In Progress status (transition 1️⃣)
Pause timer on: the last transition to a Done category status (transition 🔟)
Use case: calculate how long an issue spent in QA
Workflow example:
(0️⃣) Issue created → (1️⃣) In Progress → (2️⃣) In code review → (3️⃣) ready for testing → (4️⃣) in testing → (5️⃣) in progress → (6️⃣) In code review → (7️⃣) ready for testing → (8️⃣) in testing → (9️⃣) published to prod → (🔟) done
For this case, select Cycle time and configure the timer to measure only the testing phase:
Start timer on: the first transition to the custom In Testing status (transition 4️⃣)
Pause timer on: the last transition from the In Testing status (transition 9️⃣)
