Definition

The difference between the Initial commitment (work planned before starting the sprint) and the Final commitment (work after including all changes that happened during the sprint).

Category

Formulas:

  • Total scope change = Added work + Estimation change – Removed work

  • Total scope change = Final commitment – Initial commitment

This metric helps you analyze the following aspects:

  1. By how many story points was the sprint scope affected?

  • Open the Cross-team velocity chart.

  • Click Metrics and select Initial commitment and Total scope change.

  • Set the view to absolute values.

  1. Which issues contributed to these changes?

  • Open the Cross-team or Benchmarking velocity chart.

  • Click Metrics and select Total scope changes.

  • Click a period in the chart to open the issue list.

  1. What proportion of the final commitment was altered across multiple sprints? Are we comfortable with this extent of change? What do we consider a healthy pattern?

  • Open the Cross-team velocity chart.

  • Click Metrics and select Initial commitment and Total scope changes.

  • Under Metrics, set the ratio basis to Final commitment.

  • Set the view to percentages.

  • Set the Stacked Bar chart type.
